The Overtime multiverse is a fully functioning machine in which the players put on a thrilling performance on the court, have some of the best in college basketball on the sidelines coaching, and now back on the court as refs.
Overtime graduates Mia and Mya Pauldo suited up as officials Friday night during the Overtime Select Takeover and got the full experience.
Late in the game, Mia made a call to which the on the court emcee shouted “from way back there? You made that call from way back there?!” Juju Watkins and KK Arnold, the celeb coaches on the night, also took to the floor to protest. It was all in good fun, but the twins said they got their fill and then some.
“I ain't gone lie, that's a different pressure,” Mya said. “That was a lot.”
“It was overstimulating,” Mia chimed in. “I don't ever want to do it again.”
Despite the chaos of the job, Mya said it really puts into perspective what officials go through night in and night out.
“I feel like reffing, just seeing it from that perspective, as a player now I understand why some refs don't make the hard calls or the little ticky tacky calls,” she said. “So I see it from that perspective.”
While the Pauldo twins graduated from players, to officials as well as coaches of the 2v2 event, Tati Griffin graduated to an Overtime vet.
Though she's still barely an upperclassmen by high school standards, she's been holding her own at OT Select for years and said she's happy to see herself rise in the ranks of girls basketball.
“It’s a great opportunity and I'm grateful because I once was one of the younger kids looking up to the older kids,” she said. “And it's kind of nice to know that I've been doing this for ten plus years now so it's great to be a vet. The younger kids are looking up to me now, so I'm just tryna be the best role model that I can.”
