Maggie Doogan couldn’t tell you how it happened even if she tried. It’s not a fugue state in the medical sense of the word, but it’s also somewhere beyond a flow state too.

“I click into a different consciousness and it kind of starts flowing,” she says.

Shot after shot fell, one after the other. Didn’t matter where. By the time the game was over, the Richmond senior set a new program single-game scoring record of 48 points, the highest output from a women’s college basketball player so far this year, while leading the Spiders to a three overtime victory against Davidson.

It was a statement to the sport. Maggie Doogan isn’t just another mid-major star with gaudy numbers against lesser competition. She’s a real deal National Player of the Year contender and should be treated as such.
