Power Ranking The Current WNBA Signature Shoe Logos
With the unveiling of Caitlin Clark's new signature shoe logo with Nike, the WNBA is firmly on everyone's sneaker radar. How does her logo stack up to Angel Reese, A'ja Wilson and other major stars?
A fashion post? Yup, a fashion post.
Starting next Tuesday, we’ll have a pretty cool limited series called Style Sessions. Over the summer, I’ve been interviewing stylists for WNBA players to go one step beyond the usual “orange carpet is the new red carpet” narrative. I wanted to learn about the strategy of creating fits, how different styles and norms can create new combinations in the WNBA while also catching the eye of the high-fashion world.
Keep an eye out for that because this week, we’re priming you for what’s to come. Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark revealed her status as Nike signature athlete on Monday night, unveiling a new logo that will adorn all her merchandise. Naturally, the reception was mixed with some either loving it, hating it or existing somewhere in between.
So let’s take a look at hers and the others on the market and figure out which we like best. Let me know in the comments how you’d rank them!
6. Breanna Stewart (Puma)
Conceptually, I understand what Stewie was going for but it just kind of…is? The logo feels equal parts sports-related-tech-startup and video game console. It works a bit for a shoe but I just don’t think I can see it working anywhere else. This as a giant logo on a hoodie doesn’t move me. It’s not bad, it just doesn’t really leave me wanting much.
5. Sabrina Ionescu (Nike)
Another logo that looks great on a shoe tongue but not that great anywhere else. The ‘S’ logo, much like it is with Stewie, just feels too simple on some level. Both of theirs feel like the letters you used to draw in your notebook while sitting in 7th grade algebra. Maybe the issue is we all did that so much that it’s all we associate it with. But I have to imagine the folks getting paid a lot of money to do this had something better, right?
4. Jacy Sheldon (Holo)
Bet you all forgot Jacy Sheldon had a signature shoe, eh? Honestly, I really like this logo. It’s versatile, can work on any number of clothing items and shoes pretty well on the tongue of the shoe. The J-S combo is nice. My only critique is it feels so versatile I could picture it getting lost as a basketball signature. It gives me the vibe that I could wear that on a golf polo and someone would think it’s a PGA tour members logo.
3. Angel Reese (Reebok)
Personally, I’m fascinated to see how this lands on a signature shoe. Because as a logo, I really love it. The A to R in sleek embossed silver just feels very her. It feels like there’s a lot of ways to play with this logo from an accessory standpoint and if you were to matte the color or mute it to a fabric, it would make for a cool hoodie. If this translates well to a well-designed shoe, it may rocket to number one.
2. Caitlin Clark (Nike)
I get why some people liked it and others didn’t. The logo feels clean and refined to the point where you wonder if you’re getting a little too high brow. Like when a restaurant is serving you a deconstructed salad. But the more I look at it, the more I personally enjoy it. It’s got some luxury elements here of Gucci, Chanel and even a bit of Valentino while the interlocking C’s are a nice touch. Honestly, CC is becoming so synonymous with her as an individual that the logo may age the same way. For now, I guess I was wanting something a bit splashier. At the same time, that’s not really her style anyway.
1. A’ja Wilson (Nike)
Maybe a hot take but I have grown to absolutely adore the A’One logo. And let me tell you folks, I HATED this thing when it came out. It just felt off, I didn’t see the ‘A’ at first and it felt almost a little too deep. On Josh Hart’s podcast, A’ja actually mentioned the idea of it being to get people talking and that she thought it would grow on some. It sure did on me. Now that I’ve seen in the wild, on shoes and on merch, I think it’s a banger. What gives it the one spot is that the logo is indeed distinctive and I immediately associate it with A’ja and Nike. Time will tell if Caitlin’s achieves the same effect but right now the A’One is atop my personal leaderboard…
