The WNBA Finals are almost set as rivalries are built and legacies are made. This postseason has had everything and that's what this week is all about in the column.
"Basically, if you invest appropriately, you too can be a Golden State, a Phoenix, Las Vegas or New York. The teams that are putting their money where their mouths are happen to be the ones succeeding."
If we are talking about investments - is there some reason that NCS is diminishing the Seattle Storm investment in its franchise? You don't like yellow and green? You don't like the cutout of the Space Needle on the practice facility wall? You like billionaire money more than millionaire money? Why does the (only) women-owned team in the WNBA not deserve similar esteem to LV, NY, GS and Phoenix for the investment it made in its franchise and practice facility? It actually was the first one built from the ground up. Legendary former Storm guard Sue Bird became the first WNBA player honored by her franchise with a statue outside of Climate Pledge Arena for crying out loud! I know Ellie is the best but What Gives?
Seattle absolutely deserves their flower as a shining example of a franchise that invested prudently before anyone else did and reaped all the rewards. I listed those teams because they're examples of new owners diving in and investing immediately and seeing success as a result. Davis and Tsai are considered vanguards of that movement while Ishbia and Lacob are, in essence, brand new to the league. Wasn't an omission of Seattle in terms of their investment but more pointing out that new owners that are willing to dump in the money upfront are seeing immediate returns!
Personally, the Gamecock vs Gamecock showdown became extremely Not Fun for me when Gamecocks fans seemed to collectively decide that A’ja was their preferred Gamecock, and have started using the very same coded language they’d push back against when she was in college against Aliyah now that she plays with Caitlin Clark, a player they seem to hate more than they love Aliyah OR A’ja!
A’ja herself has also made it less fun by complaining about fouls, when she famously once tied the single game scoring record with HALF of her points coming at the line (26 points, I believe), and she and Becky have also made it less fun by acting like A’ja magically happens to have a bad game every time she plays the Fever, rather than acknowledging that Aliyah has her number defensively.
Phew SAY THAT! I legit just said in our chat the other day she's playing the same way she's always played it was just cool when it was for our team. Now it's for public enemy #1 and there's been a grand switch because "Caitlin has rubbed off on her." So she's braindead and easily impressionable/manipulated but can learn an entirely new play style in just one year! Generational 😤😤
It's wild. Like, I did always wonder who SC fans (both the ones online and the ones in the media) would root for if the Fever ever played the Aces, but I genuinely never imagined they'd turn on Aliyah in this particularly ugly way.
And it's super funny cuz A'ja be whackin the 💩outta Lish but it's tee hee ha ha besties cuz Lish doesn't fight back. The day she does we might see a shift then too.

It's been fun to watch AT take over the post-season. Rooting for her and DB to finish what they couldn't in Connecticut
